During the spring semester of 2014 I was a Fulbright Scholar in Moldova. My home institution was the Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University in Chisinau (the capitol city). I was in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. While in that position I taught a variety of courses, most with an emphasis on democratic pedagogy. I also engaged in a number of service opportunities in the city and presented at workshops and conferences around the country (see the separate Fulbright Vita).
This was my second Fulbright experience. In 1992-93 I was a Fulbright exchange teacher in Eger, Hungary. Because of my range of service opportunities and scholarly engagement my time in Moldova was even more profound in its impact than that first experience. My research while in Moldova focused on the progress of democratic pedagogy in Moldova. However, the research shifted (after quickly finding that democratic pedagogy was a "non-starter" in the schools) to looking at the perceptions of young people regarding the nature of democracy and its progress in Moldova.
